Kids room is a special space which requires a thoughtful approach to room design and decorating.
Room decorating for a preschooler has nothing to do with a teen room design.

Dramatic changes in kids bedroom design have to happen in the same room interior within short 10-15 years.

Unlike other room designs, kids room design and interior decorating should include growing with kids furniture designs and decorating ideas that allow future alterations and adjustments.

Kids room designs with functional kids decor have to meet needs for children changing activities.

A baby room is a child's first personal space. The memories and related associations stay with kids for life, so adults should try to provide the best possible living conditions, the most comfortable kids room design, functional kids bedroom furniture and stimulating kids decor for their children at home.

Functional room design

Interior decorating ideas for children differ from adults room designs. Functionality is the key factor for kids or adults home design,  but if adults understand 'functionality' as 'convenience' and 'comfort,' kids connect bedroom decor objects functionality to their  interest in these kids bedroom decorating elements. Kids room design and decorating for function is different for kids and adults.

Functional kids room design

For example, for adults a sofa or an armchair is a functional item if they feel comfortable sitting on it in a certain position. For a child a sofa is functional  if it is possible not just to sit, but also to jump or roll on it easily. Children furniture is functional if kids find some interesting details on it or if can talk to it, for example. Young children would prefer functional children's furniture that cooperates with kids during the play and can be transformed into imaginary characters, like a car, a train, a boat, a tent, a space ship or a plane.

A beautiful, elegantly finished desk in the kids room has no interest for a child, if there is nothing bright or unusual painted on it. On the opposite, scratches on kids room furniture surfaces generate huge interest.

Ordinary children's bedroom furniture, and all furniture items in general, like a boring wardrobe or a closed box for toys, are not interesting for children, and that means 'not functional.' Kids do not mind an uncomfortable, as adults interpret it, kids room decor piece, if it is interesting to play with.

Kids room design - money saving tip

Functional kids ideas do not include luxurious kids bedroom furniture or room decorating. Functional kids room designs can be inexpensive.

The best kids room design for young children is the space where they can freely run, crawl and jump. The basic principles of kids room furniture arrangement and decorating kids room are sometimes just the opposite to decorating rooms for adults.

Functional kids decor

The purpose of a baby room decor, young kids room or a teenage room design is not arranging a beautiful, soft and comfortable interior that parents would like. The functionality of  kids room design and their home decorating ideas needs to be determined by kid's nature, activities and preferences.

The functionality of kids room design directly depends not only on the functionality of kids bedroom furniture, but also on kids bedroom size and its layout.

Kids room design - size and layout

100 sq ft children room is the minimum area required for kids comfortable zone, if there is one kid's bed in the room. 150 sq ft boys or girls room can accommodate two kids beds and enough space to move around. This minimal area provides space for a kid bed ( or kids bunk beds), a wardrobe or kids storage unit, a small desk with a chair, book shelves and the game zone for children.

Approximately 110 - 135 sq ft kid's bedroom is very comfortable for a single child. 150 -200 sq ft provide enough space to design two girls or two boys room. It is obvious that ideally the kids room should not be the smallest in the house. Spacious kids room design offers children more comfort, functionality and more fun.

And additionally, kids room should be as far as possible from all sources of noise. The best location for kids room is on the southern, south-eastern and south-western sides of the house. Children deserve the best space in the house, the largest, warmest and brightest.
